Privacy Policy

Notice God is a spiritual reflection app made by James Friesen. Your reflections are sacred and private — this policy explains plainly what the app stores, what leaves your device, and what never does.

The short version

• Everything you write is stored on your device. Using the app does not require an account.
• If you create an account, your reflections are backed up to our cloud database so you can sync across devices.
• We do not sell your data, show ads, or use third-party advertising or analytics trackers. Ever.
• Your personal reflections are encrypted by the app before they're stored in our database, with the key kept separate from the database itself.
• You can delete your account and all of its data at any time, from inside the app.

What the app stores on your device

All of your reflection content — journal entries, gratitude lists, confessions, emotions, energy check-ins, conversation notes, reflection paths, and settings — is saved in a local database on your device. If you use the app without an account, this content never leaves your device except in the limited cases described below (weather lookup and crash reports).

If you create an account (optional)

Accounts exist for one purpose: backing up your reflections and syncing them across devices. When you sign in — with email, Apple, or Google — we store:

• Your email address and a user ID, managed by our authentication and database provider, Supabase.
• Your reflection content, synced to our Supabase database and linked to your user ID. It is encrypted in transit, and the written content is additionally encrypted at rest as described below.

How your synced reflections are encrypted

Before the written content of your personal reflections is saved to our database, the app encrypts it with AES-256. The key used to decrypt it is held separately from the database, so the content is stored as unreadable ciphertext: anyone who obtained a copy of the database alone could not read your reflections.

To be clear about what this is and isn't: because our optional AI insight features and account support require the content to be processed, this is not "zero-knowledge" encryption — we control the decryption key. It is strong protection against outside access and data breaches, backed by our commitment (below) never to read your reflections. Some non-content details needed to make syncing work — such as timestamps and which emotions you selected — are stored in standard, readable form.

Location and weather (optional)

You can optionally allow the app to record where you were during a reflection. If you grant location permission, the app stores your coordinates and city name with that session, and sends the coordinates (nothing else — no name, email, or ID) to the Open-Meteo weather service to record the weather at that moment. If you never grant location permission, none of this happens. The location recorded with a reflection is not included in the optional AI features described below unless you separately choose to include it.

AI insights (optional)

Some features can generate spiritual insights from your reflections using Claude, an AI model by Anthropic. When you explicitly use one of these features, the relevant reflection text is sent through our server to Anthropic's API to generate the insight, then returned to you. No personally identifying information — including your name, email address, or user ID — is sent to Anthropic. There are two exceptions: anything you may have written about yourself in the reflection text itself, and your recorded location if you choose to include it, as described below. We do not store your reflections on our server in this process, and Anthropic does not use API data to train its models. AI features run only when you tap them — nothing is analyzed in the background.

By default, the location recorded with a reflection is not sent for AI insights, even if you have allowed the app to record it. You can choose to include it under Account & Settings → Privacy, with the option "Include recorded location when sending data for AI processing." When that option is on, each reflection sent for an insight also includes the city name saved with it. Your coordinates are never sent for AI insights — only the place name, and only if one was resolved. This option is off unless you turn it on; it applies to every reflection included in an insight, including ones recorded before you turned it on; and it is stored on that device only, so it does not follow your account to your other devices.

Crash reports

The app uses Sentry to collect crash and error reports so we can fix bugs. These reports contain technical diagnostics (device model, OS version, stack traces). They are configured to exclude your IP address and personal identity, and they never include your reflection content or screen recordings.

Notifications

Reflection reminders are scheduled locally on your device. We run no push notification servers and cannot see your notification activity.

What we never do

• Sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for their own purposes.
• Show advertising or use advertising trackers.
• Read your reflections. Your content is yours.

Data retention and deletion

• Without an account: your data lives only on your device. Deleting the app deletes it.
• With an account: your synced data is kept until you delete it. In the app, go to Profile → Delete Account to permanently erase your account, your synced reflections, and all associated data from our servers and from the device. This cannot be undone.

Children

Notice God is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the "last updated" date above. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
